What did men do during the Civil War if they did not want to fight?

Men on both sides were inspired to fight by patriotism, state pride, the chance for adventure, steady pay. Union soldiers fought to preserve the Union; the common Confederate fought to defend his home. If they did not want to fight i doubt they could do anything about it they had to because it was either up the people to make a choice and either fight, try to take cover some where i assume or just let themselves get killed it does seem cruel but unfortunately that was how it occurred in those devastating times.
