Sharecropping meant that African Americans worked on farms in return for food, housing, tools, and seeds. In a way, slavery was maintained, because often an African American would work for the white man who had owned him before the war. However, the only difference is that they could leave legally (even if it angered the white landowner to the point of attacking the African American).
