One reason why he was not re-elected was the XYZ affair.

France and Britain had an undeclared naval war between the two of them. America had sent negotiation teams to reg and stop the dispute. They had let Britain to seize French goods from their ships. While the strength had captured ships that held the US flag. France demanded to be payed $250,000 and a 10 million dollar loan, but America refused.

Adams didn’t want a war to happen, so he created peace with the French. Managing to prevent it. However he lost popularity with others, including his own party since they wanted a fight to happen
