What is Foil Method?

A foil method is a technique where two or more binomials multiply.

  • First
  • Outer
  • Inner
  • Last

Example 1

\tt{(b + 3) (b + 7)}

\tt{F: (b)(b) = b^2}

\tt{O: (b)(7) = b7}

\tt{I: (3)(b) = 3b}

\tt{L:(3)(7) = 37}

\tt{=b^2 +7b+3b+21}

= \boxed{ \tt{b^2 +10b+2}}

Example 2

\tt{(x + 3)^2}

\tt{F: (x)(x) = x^2}

\tt{O: (x)(3) = x3}

\tt{I: (3)(x) = 3x}

\tt{L:(3)(3) = 9}

\tt{=x^2 +3x+3x+9}

= \boxed{ \tt{x^2 +6x+9}}
