Me gusta mucho la arquitectura de Puerto Rico, aunque es muy diferente de la arquitectura típica de los Estados Unidos. Primero, debido a que esta isla tiene un clima tropical, con huracanes e inundaciones frecuentes, las casas se construyen todas de concreto, sin sótanos. A veces, en zonas de inundación, las casas se construyen de dos niveles: construyen la marquesina en donde guardan el carro en el primer piso y la casa se construye arriba para evitar daños por inundaciones. ¡Me fascina cómo las cosas son tan distintas aquí en el Caribe!
Otra diferencia que se ve es la influencia de España en el estilo de los edificios, los techos de terracota, los jardines y los colores brillantes. ¡Son requete-hermosos! La casa donde vivo es muy grande y moderna en comparación con las casas de aquí. Normalmente, las familias tienen los mismos muebles por muchos años, a veces décadas, porque todo lo que se vende en la isla es importado, lo que resulta caro. No es común tener muebles de un estilo contemporáneo como en los Estados Unidos; siempre son bonitos pero son diferentes para mí.
Otra cosa que me llama la atención es que las casas están pintadas de colores brillantes no solo en la parte de afuera sino también en la de adentro. Estoy viviendo en una casa con paredes de todos colores. Roja, amarilla, morada, anaranjada y tres tonos de verde...¡y no son colores claros!
Tampoco tenemos alfombra aquí en Puerto Rico. Las casas pasan siempre abiertas y se disfruta mucho de su clima tropical. Si la lluvia o el agua entrara en la casa, sería difícil secar la alfombra. Los cuartos, en vez de tener pisos alfombrados los tienen enlosados. Por fuera, las casas tienen todas las ventanas protegidas con rejas , también las puertas, los patios y la marquesina tienen rejas. ¡Me siento súper seguro en las casas de Puerto Rico!
La única diferencia, que no me gusta es que hay tanta humedad y siempre hace calor, pero los puertorriqueños no acostumbran a usar el aire acondicionado porque están acostumbrados al calor. Ay, ¡qué calor! creo que yo aunque viviera aquí diez años no me acostumbraría, pero ¡qué fácil me acostumbré a las playas desde el primer día!, ¡las voy a extrañar muchísimo!

I really like the architecture of Puerto Rico, although it is very different from the typical architecture of the United States. First, because this island has a tropical climate, with frequent hurricanes and floods, the houses are all built of concrete, with no basements. Sometimes, in flood zones, houses are built on two levels: they build the carport on the first floor and the house is built on top to prevent flood damage. It fascinates me how things are so different here in the Caribbean!

Another difference that is seen is the influence of Spain in the style of the buildings, the terracotta roofs, the gardens and the bright colors. They are super-beautiful! The house where I live is very large and modern compared to the houses here. Typically, families have the same furniture for many years, sometimes decades, because everything sold on the island is imported, which is expensive. It is not common to have furniture in a contemporary style as in the United States; They are always pretty but they are different for me.

Another thing that strikes me is that the houses are painted in bright colors not only on the outside but also on the inside. I am living in a house with walls of all colors. Red, yellow, purple, orange and three shades of green ... and they are not light colors!

We don't have carpet here in Puerto Rico either. The houses are always open and the tropical climate is very much enjoyed. If rain or water got into the house, it would be difficult to dry the carpet. The rooms, instead of having carpeted floors, have them tiled. Outside, the houses have all the windows protected with bars, also the doors, the patios and the canopy have bars. I feel super safe in the houses of Puerto Rico!

The only difference, which I don't like, is that it's so humid and it's always hot, but Puerto Ricans don't usually use the air conditioning because they're used to the heat. Oh that's hot!
