They are both equal to y so set them equal to each other. (transitive property)

3x-1=1/2x+2

Multiply each side by 2.

(2)(3x-1)=2(1/2x+2)

6x-2=x+4

Subtract x from each side.

5x-2=4

Add two to each side.

5x=6

Divide each side by 5.

x=5/6

Now plug 5/6 into y=3x-1.

y=3(5/6)-1

y=(15/6)-1

y=(5/2)-1

Subtract 1.

y=3/2
