You compare the sizes of two MP3 players. The old model is 34 inch thick. The new model is 25 inch thick. How much thinner is the new model than the old model?

Answer:

(7)/(20) or 0.35

Explanation:

"Thinner" and "than" suggest subtraction. So find the difference:

(3)/(4) -(2)/(5)

Find the least common denominator to subtract

4, 8, 12, 16, 20

5, 10, 15, 20

20 is the lowest common denominator. Multiply the fractions until they have the same denominator of 20. Don't forget to do the same with the numerator:

(3(5))/(4(5)) -(2(4))/(5(4))

Simplify

(15)/(20) -(8)/(20)

Now subtract, but don't change the denominator:

(15)/(20) -(8)/(20)=(7)/(20)

The newer model is 0.35 inches thinner than the old model.
