Small roots anchor plants to supporting branches, and their broad leaf bases form a tank or cup that holds water. The tanks support a thriving ecosystem of bacteria, protozoa, small crustaceans, mosquito and dragonfly larvae, tadpoles, birds, salamanders, and frogs.
