The sum of the 3 angles in a triangle = 180° , then

y - 2 + 74 + 40 = 180 , that is

y + 112 = 180 ( subtract 112 from both sides )

y = 68 , so

y - 2 = 68 - 2 = 66

The 3 angles lying on the straight line sum to 180°

x - 1 + 40 + 66 = 180 , that is

x + 105 = 180 ( subtract 105 from both sides )

x = 75
