Kevin is creating a target for a game that will be played at the schools carnival. In order to do this kevin needs to put red tape in the shape of an x as shown below. If the area of the sqaure board is 25 square feet how many feet of tape will he need?

Given: (Figure Attached)

Area of Square = 25 square feet

As we know

Area of square = length x width = a x a = 25

a * a = 25

a = ±5 by taking square root both sides

It means a = 5 as the length can not be negative

Now we know the length of sides of square and as shown in figure we can break the figure in two triangles,

By using Pythagoras theorem on one triangle we will find the length of one line of x and then multiply the x with 2 to get the overall feet of tape.


Hypotenuse^(2) =
Base^(2) + Perpendicular^(2)


Hypotenuse^(2) =
x^(2) = 5^(2) + 5^(2)


x^(2) = 50

x = ± 7.07 It means x = 7.07

Now the total tape required is 2 * x = 2*7.07 = 14.14
