70 students out of the 6th grade went to an animal shelter for a field trip. This is 60% of the 6th grade. How many students are in the 6th grade?

Answer:

116

Explanation:

70 students = 60%

60% divided by 3 = 20%

70 students divided by 3 = 23.333

(skip this part) 20% x 5 = 100

23.333 x 5 = 116.666 = 116 students

Really weird explanation but it works :)

ALSO: turn 60% into a decimal by moving the period two spaces to the left = .6

Divide 70/.6 = 116.6 = 116 students

Answer:

116 students

Explanation:

70 is 60% of a whole. In order to find the whole we must divide.

turn 60% to a decimal (move the decimal two spaces to the left: 0.6) then divide 70/0.6 and that equals 116.6, but obviously we can't split up a person so we have to round down to the nearest whole which is 116.

so, 70 is 60% of the whole 116.

to check your answer, you can do 116*0.6 which equals 70.

Hope this helps!
