In symmetrical balance, both sides of the pages have the same balance, shape, lines and other elements. An asymmetric balance occurs when the two sides of a website are not the same but have similar elements. Radial symmetry places the elements in a circular pattern. Although popular in print editions, radial symmetry is not very popular on web pages because circular symmetry is difficult to achieve.

Occasionally a designer will intentionally produce an unbalanced design, usually in an effort to focus attention on one element.
