Explanation:

Note that (f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x), thus

f(x) - g(x)

= 5x² - 3 - (x² - 4x - 8 ) ← distribute parenthesis by - 1

= 5x² - 3 - x² + 4x + 8 ← collect like terms

= 4x² + 4x + 5
