Given that,

We have to solve the above equation

Use the distributive property

a(b + c) = ab + bc

From given,

$(2)/(5) * (j + 40) = -4\\\\(2)/(5)j + (80)/(5) = -4\\\\Simplify\\\\(2)/(5)j + 16 = -4$

Move the constant to other side of equation

$(2)/(5)j = -4 - 16\\\\(2)/(5)j = -20\\\\Therefore\\\\j = -20 * (5)/(2)\\\\Simplify\\\\j = -10 * 5\\\\j = -50$

Thus the value of j is -50
