We expect following things to observe when inspecting the external portion of the nose:

• Symmetry

• Position in the midline
• In proportion to other facial features.

We test the patency of the nostrils by :

• By giving the command to the patient to close one of his nasal wing with his finger and sniff inward by the other naris.

Abnormal finding indicates:

• An abnormal finding indicates any obstruction which later is explored with the nasal speculum.
