The First Punic War was fought to establish control over the strategic islands of Corsica and Sicily. In 264 the Carthaginians intervened in a dispute between the two principal cities on the Sicilian east coast, Messana and Syracuse, and so established a presence on the island.

Answer:

The first punic war was one of the longest and the brutal battles of the ancient antiquity that expanded for nearly 23 years.

the war primarily started as a result of the power struggle between Rome and the then powerful Carthage. During the war, Carthage and Syracuse was allies and fought against the republic of Rome.

However, over the cause of the 23 years, Rome conquered much of the Sicily and the unfair terms imposed by Rome on Carthage would eventually lay foundation to the 2nd and 3rd punic wars.
