The researcher originally reported a standard deviation of 12.3 grams. However, upon closer investigation, she discovered that her scale was 1.1 grams off, and that each fish was actually 1.1 grams heavier than originally reported. What is the new standard deviation?

Answer:

12.3 grams

Explanation:

When a constant value is added to each data element in a distribution, the maen changes by that constant but the standard deviation stays the same. This is because the standard deviation is a measure of how distant the data are from the mean. When a constant value is added to each of them, the mean also gets the increment. Hence, the distance from the mean is maintained.

However, if the data were multiplied by a constant factor, then the standard deviation will be multiplied by the same factor as well as the mean.

Therefore, the standard deviation from the question remains the same as before, 12.3 grams.
