A high school track is shaped as a rectangle with a half circle on either side.

A rectangle has a length of 85 yards and width of 25 yards. 2 semicircles with diameters of 25 yards are on each end of the rectangle.

Jasmine plans on running three laps. How many yards will Jasmine run? Use 3.14 for Pi.

Jasmine will run 745.5 yards

Explanation:

Jasmine runs along the track. So she will be covering the the circumference of the semi circle on the one side followed by the length followed by the circumference of the semi circle on the other side finally going through the other length

So In 1 lap Jasmine covers

= circumference of the semicircle + length of the rectangle + circumference of the semicircle + length of the rectangle

= 2(circumference of the semicircle + length of the rectangle )

= circumference of the circle + 2(length of the rectangle)

Now lets find the circumference of the circle

circumference of the circle =
2 \pi r

We have diameter of the circle = 25 yards

Then radius =
(25)/(2)= 12.5 yards

Now circumference of the circle =
2 \pi (12.5) =
2 * 3.14 * 12.5 = 78.5 yards

In One lap Jasmine will be covering =
78.5 +2(85)= 78.5 + 170 = 248.5 yards

In 3 laps =
3 * 248.5 = 745.5 yards
