A large tower is to be supported by a series of steel wires. It is estimated that the load on each wire will be 10,100 N. Determine the minimum required wire diameter assuming a factor of safety of 1.5 and a yield strength of 900 MPa.

Answer:

d=4.63 mm

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that

Load ,P = 10,100 N

FOS = 1.5

Sy= 900 MPa

Therefore the working stress will be

S=(900)/(1.5)=600\ MPa

Lets take the diameter of wire = d mm

The area
A=(\pi)/(4)d^2

For design purpose

\sigma=(P)/(A)

S=(P)/(A)

A=(P)/(S)

A=(10100)/(600)\ mm^2

A=16.83 mm²

16.83=(\pi)/(4)d^2

d^2=21.44\ mm^2

d=4.63 mm
