A heterozygous white-fruited squash plant is crossed with a yellow-fruited plant, yielding 200 seeds. Of these, 110 produce white-fruited plants while only 90 produce yellow-fruited plants. Are these results statistically significant? Explain using Chi-square analysis.

We set up hypotheses as

H0: Both produce equal seeds

Ha: Both produce different number of seeds

(Two tailed chi square test at 5% level of significance)

If null hypothesis were true, expected would be

100 each

Chi square = Sum of (observed-expected)^2/expected

=
(110-100)^2/100 + (90-100)^2/100\\= 20

df = 1

p value <0.00001

Since p is less than 0.05 we reject null hypothesis

There is significant difference between the number of plants produced.
