if (x + 2) is a factor of the polynomial , then if x = - 2 gives the polynomial a value of zero it is a factor

(- 2)³ + 5(- 2)² - 4(- 2) - 20

= - 8 + 5(4) + 8 - 20

= - 8 + 20 + 8 - 20

= 0

since polynomial = 0 then (x + 2) is a factor
