The knot is a unit often used to measure the speed of watercraft and aircraft. One knot is equal to 1 nautical mile (1.852km) per hour. If an airplane travels at a speed of 500 knots, what is this speed in miles per hour?

To solve this problem we will use the concept related to nautical miles per hour (Knot) To miles per hour. From the definition we know that

1 \text{Nautical mile} = 1.15078miles

So if the aircraft travels to 500 Knots we would have to

v = 500 Knots (\frac{1 \text{Nautical mile}/hour}{1 knot})

v = 500 \frac{\text{Nautical mile}}{hour} (\frac{ 1.15078\text{miles} }{1 \text{Nautical mile}})

v = 575.39 mph

Therefore the speed in miles per hour is 575.39mph
