The sum of two numbers is 59. The difference between 2 times the first number and 6 times the second is -34. Find the two numbers.

Answer: x = 40 ; y = 19

Explanation:

x + y = 59

2*x - 6*y = -34

x + y = 59

x = 59 - y

2*(59 - y) - 6*y = -34

118 - 2*y - 6*y = -34

- 8*y = -34 - 118

-8*y = -152

y = -152 / -8

y = 19

x = 59 - y

x = 59 - 19

x = 40
