The poems I,too,by Langston Hughes and from the dark tower by counter Cullen both use figurative language to express their options about racial segregation. Read each poem and then match each characteristics to the correct poem.

The characteristics of each poem are :

I too by Langston Hughes:

  • This poem is a reference to Whitman's poem "I hear America singing". In this poem, Whitman talks about how every American mechanic, carpenter, boatman is singing but he does not mention about the black people. This is why this poem is titled as "I too" to express that Hughes who is an African American is still an American.
  • It does not have a specific rhyme scheme so it is known as "free verse".

From the Dark tower by Counter Cullen:

  • This poem talks about the social injustice paradox because the white men are oppressing the black men and do not give them proper access to education, power.
  • It is written in iambic pentameter and has a rhyme scheme.
  • The poem is filled with angry tone shows the resentment of the black people.
