pi is about 3.14, so pi squared is about 3.14 x 3.14.

(do a little long multiplication)

3.14 squared = 9.8596

Since 3.14 squared is less than 10, 3.14 itself is less than sqrt(10).

This means 3.14 is a little bit closer to zero (or to the left) of sqrt(10) on the number line.
