The sum of two numbers is 40. The larger number is 8 more than the smaller number. What are the numbers?​

we can do trial and improvement

let's start with 18 and 26

= 44

let's try something smaller

16 and 24

=40

the answer is 40

Let's solve....

Let the larger number be x

Let the smaller number be y

So

Now x+y=40

So just add 40+8=48

We know that


2x = 48 \\ \\ \therefore \: x = (48)/(2) \\ \\ simplify \\ \\ \frac{ \cancel{48} \: ^(24) }{ \cancel{2} }

So larger number is 24

To find the smaller number.... Just subtract The total number by larger number that is


40 - 24 = 16 \\ \\

So 16 is the smaller number...

Larger number is 24 and smaller is 16
