3y-5=y+2y-9
3y-5=3y-9 (add the y's on the right side)
-5=9 (cancel out 3y on both sides because they are the same)
No solution (-5 does not 9 so there is no solution)

There is no solution to this equation. We end up with a false statement without a variable.
