Maybe this is a bit biased, but when I hear Indigenous, I automatically think of Native Americans, as I'm sure my fellow Americans do. What tribe, group, or location you come from is very important to the culture they used to have, and the culture they do have. Perhaps the most important factor. Status or non-status is important because it tells you the position their tribe has.
