This is a proportion question. That means that the ratios given are equal. There are 4 facts all together. 3 are given, you have to solve for the 4th. The procedure is the same every time.

Equation (proportion)

cost of apples 1.09/ Number of apples (3) = cost of nearly a dozen (x)/Number = 11.

1.09/3 = x / 11 Cross Multiply

3x = 1.09 * 11 Combine the right

3x = 11.99 Divide by 3

3x/3 = 11.99/3

x = 3.99

Answer
