4n² + 4n + 5 = 173

4n² + 4n = 168

divide through by 4

n² + n - 42 = 0

n² + 7n - 6n - 42= 0

(n + 7)(n - 6) = 0

n = -7 or 6

but the solution is 6 since base is not negative.
