to remove it you have to SUBTRACT ...

you added "X" to both sides that was/is the error in your attempt

Explanation:

-2x + 5(x-1) = -11 + x

-2x + 5x - 5 = -11 +x

3x - 5 = -11 + x

2x - 5 = -11

2x = -6

x = -3
