We are asked to find a side when we know a angle adjacent to that side. And we are given a side opposite of that angle. We can use Tangent to find the side length.


\tan(40) = (48)/(x)

Take the reciprocal of both sides.


(1)/( \tan( 40) ) ) = (x)/( 48)

Multiply both sides by 48.


x = (1)/( \tan(40) ) * 48


x = 57.2
