x² - 10x - 2 = 17 ( add 2 to both sides )

x² - 10x = 19

To complete the square

add ( half the coefficient 0f the x- term )² to both sides

x² + 2(- 5)x + 25 = 19 + 25

(x - 5)² = 44 ( take the square root of both sides )

x - 5 = ±
\sqrt{44 ( add 5 to both sides )

x = 5 ±
√(44)

Then solutions are

x = 5 -
√(44) , x = 5 +
√(44)
