3x^2 - 5x - 2 = 0

Find the factors of 3*-2 that are the same as the addends for -5:

3*-2 = -6

Factors of -6: -6*1

Addends: -6 + 1

3x^2 - 6x + x - 2 = 0

(3x^2 - 6x) + (x - 2) = 0

(factor in each parantheses)

3x(x - 2) + 1(x - 2) = 0

(3x + 1)(x - 2) = 0

(set each of the terms to 0 and solve)

3x + 1 = 0

3x = -1

x = -1/3

x - 2 = 0

x = 2
