A carpenter has two pieces of wood. He wants to find the density of each piece.

The first piece came from a birch tree. The piece of birch wood measures 2 meters by 4 meters by 3 meters and weighs (mass) 16 kilograms.

The second piece came from a cypress tree. The piece of cypress wood measures 3 meters by 5 meters by 2 meters and weighs (mass) 15.3 kilograms.

Which piece of wood has a greater density?

Answer:

The wood from the birch tree has a greater density than the wood that came from the cypress tree.

Explanation:

Density formula: mass/volume

2 times 4 times 3=24 meters for the volume

Birch tree: 16/24 is the density

3 times 5 times 2=30 meters for the volume

Cypress tree: 15.3/30 is the density

If we convert the densities of each piece of wood to decimal it will be easier to determine which has a greater density.

So birch tree: 0.6 repeating is the density

Cypress tree: 0.51 is the density

Therefore the wood that came from the birch tree has a greater density than the wood that came from the cypress tree.

Hope I helped, have a nice day :)
