Waves come in two kinds, longitudinal and transverse. Transverse waves are like those on water, with the surface going up and down, and longitudinal waves are like of those of sound, consisting of alternating compressions and rarefactions in a medium.

There are 2 types of waves mechanical and electromagnetic, mechanical waves need a medium to travel energy, while an electromagnetic wave doesn’t not require a medium. Electromagnetic waves travel through the vacuum(space). Electromagnetic waves include : radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, Ultraviolet light ( UV light), x-rays, and gamma rays, all of those are transverse waves. Mechanical waves are separated into 2 waves longitudinal and transverse. Transverse waves travel up and down while longitudinal waves travel back-and-forth
