-7 -3 = - 10

You have to think of this the way you would money. Which would you rather owe - 7 dollars or - 10 dollars. Surely you would say that - 7 is better than - 10.

So - 10 looks like it is three less than - 7

It works if the money thing makes sense to you.

If that doesn't work then think of a number line. As you keep on going left, the number looks like it is getting bigger, but is it. Again - 10 is smaller than - 7.

If you are talking about plus numbers then 3 less then 7 is not 10. It is 4.
