if the theater sold 36 adult tickets and the ratio of adult to children was 4:3, we already know that they sold more adult tickets than children tickets. to turn 36 into 4, we divide 36/4 to get 9, 4*9=36 so we have to do this to the 3, 3*9=27. 36:27 is equal to 4:3.
