y = x2 + 5x – 9

x= -5, 2

Explanation:

set them equal to each other:
x^(2)+5x-9=2x+1

subtract 2x from both sides:
x^(2) +3x-9=1

subtract 1 from both sides to make it equal to zero:
x^(2) +3x-10=0

find which 2 factors of -10 equal 3: 5 and -2

plug it into:
(x +?):
(x+5) (x -2)

set both equations to zero:
x +5=0
x-2=0

solve: x
