Childhood obesity is when a child weighs more than they should be than their based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). It is caused by the combination of consuming too much food and exercising very little. Fast food candy, and soft drinks (highly processed foods) are often linked to childhood obesity.
Associated risks include:
High blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.
Breathing problems, such as asthma and sleep apnea.
Joint problems and musculoskeletal discomfort.
