The x's go up by ones (+1 +1 +1 to get from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4) and the y's go up by threes (+3 +3 +3 to go from 8 to 11 to 14 to 17) If it was exponential the y's would get really big really fast and it would not be the same action (+3 +3 +3) in between each number.

Also, you could graph it and see a line. And for future questions, the change in between could also be going down (such as -5 -5 -5)
