Given the 2 equations

x + y = 2 → (1)

2x + y = 4 → (2)

Subtract (1) from (2) term by term to eliminate y

2x - x + y - y = 4 - 2 , that is

x + 0 = 2

x = 2

Substitute x = 2 into either of the 2 equations and evaluate for y

Substituting into (1)

2 + y = 2 ( subtract 2 from both sides )

y = 0

one solution is (2, 0 )
