15 dimes, 12 quarters

Explanation:

d + q = 27

.10d + .25q = 4.5

solve by substituting '27-q' for 'd'

.10(27-q) + .25q = 4.5

2.7 - .1q + .25q = 4.5

.15q = 1.8

q = 1.8/.15

q = 12

d = 27-12 which is 15
