WASHINGTON'S NFL TEAM DROPS ITS NICKNAME AFTER 87 YEARS

A big change just happened in the National Football League. It is called the NFL for short. For nearly 90 years, the Washington football team had used a nickname that was considered offensive to Native Americans, On July 13, the team made an announcement. It will stop using that name. Washington also will change its logo. For many years the team name was criticized. Now. a new name will be chosen. The change comes as many are reflecting about racism in the United States. Statues honoring people with racist beliefs are being tom down. Other monuments are being questioned, too. Team Began A "Thorough Review" Dan Snyder has owned the Washington football team since 1999. He has been a Washington fan since he was young. Snyder once declared he would never change the name. However, several companies recently lined up against the name. FedEx, Nike, Pepsi and Bank of America are a few. Each helps fund the Washington team. Two weeks after, Snyder's team began a "thorough review." Ray Halbritter is an Oneida Indian Nation Representative. He has led the "Change the Mascot" program. He praised the NFL and Snyder for the move. Several Indigenous leaders and groups wrote to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in early July. They demanded Washington stop using the name. Some say the old team name is a "dictionary-defined racial slur." Goodell said he supported the review. FedEx officially spoke against the name in July. The company called for a change. Its move was especially important. FedEx leader Frederick Smith owns part of the team. The team's stadium is called FedEx Field. Stadium Section Renamed For Team's First Black Player George Preston Marshall created the team. It began in 1933. Marshall had racist beliefs. He supported segregating or separating Black and white people in public spaces. Segregation was outlawed in 1964. Marshall was the last NFL owner to allow Black players on his team. Recently, Washington made changes. A stadium section had been named after Marshall. They renamed it for Bobby Mitchell. He was the team's first Black player. Crystal Echo Hawk is part of the Native American organization IllumiNative. She and others want all Native American names and images out of sports. The Atlanta Braves is a Major League Baseball team. It uses Native American images. So does the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks. Both have said they have no plans to change. Hopes For A "Broader Discussion" Halbritter noted their names are not considered racial slurs. Still, he hopes for a "broader discussion." He pointed out that Florida State University is called the Seminoles. The university spoke with the Seminole tribe about the name. Sports teams often don't speak with Native American tribes in such situations, says Halbritter. Speaking with Native leaders shows respect, he said. Some Washington fans are upset about the name change. They say it is a tradition they a wanted to keep The team has had just five playoff appearances in 21 years. Ron Rivera is now its head coach. If the team starts winning with the new name, it could help Snyder look good to fans.
