you would use the pythagorean theorem to solve this equation: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

12^2 + b^2 = 20^2
b^2 = 16
x = 16

so, hypotenuse^2 = Base^2 + Height^2

=> x^2+12^2 = 20^2

=> x^2 + 144 = 400

=> x^2 = 400 - 144

=> x^2 = 256

=> x = 256

=> x = 16
