Propaganda posters of World War I showed a heroic picture of the soldiers who participated in the war. They made war seemed almost desirable, and these posters succeeded in their goal of attracting many new young recruits to the different national armies.

The actual experience of the war was very brutal instead. The war used the latest industrial technology in the form of deadlier weapons, military techniques, and organization, and soldiers took the brunt of it, often in extremely brutal and traumatic ways. The war in trenches is an example of this.
