The monumental stone heads they created must be the most striking legacy of the Olmec culture. They were cut into a basalt and all display unique face characteristics such that depictions of true rulers could be regarded. The Olmecs had been polytheistic, believed in multiple gods who dominated life's natural forces. Their religion built on eight Gods: the Olmec, the Bird Monster, the Shark, the Maize, the Rain, the Were-Jaguar, and the Feathered Snake.
