Think of ratios as a fraction

3/1 = 6/x

to get from 3 to 6 you multiply it by 2. now for the ratio to be the same, you have to multiply the denominator by 2 as well. 2 x 1 = 2. therefore it would be 6/2. you can notice that if you simplify it, it is equal to 3/1. it is the same thing with ratios.
