The Brezhnev Doctrine began to crumble as the communist system in both Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union began to falter in the mid-1980s. The Soviet communist economy was horribly inefficient and rife with corruption, and the Soviet Union experienced significant financial hardship after Brezhnev's death.
