Please no links! Or whatever I guess! What does this excerpt from the Declaration of Independence mean

“In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.”

I think this means that the people who are trying to give petitions for redress, humbly, are being punished for it. The people are saying that the ruler is a tyrant and is unfit to be a ruler of the free people. The people were explaining their experiences under their previous ruler.
